Pokemon isn’t just about exploring the land and becoming a master  – it’s about knowing the game inside and out. In its current form, Pokemon Godoesn’t offer much for an in-game tutorial to show you the ropes, but there are even more tips, tricks, and secrets to uncover outside of the game’s core mechanics.
Between unexplained icons, vague metrics, and ambiguous notifications,Pokemon Go is quite mysterious, save for the actual act of finding and catching Pokemon. Below is a breakdown of a few key techniques you can use to maximize your play time, along with a few secrets we’ve uncovered. Before diving into that, however, try to familiarize yourself with the game.

First, check the available starting Pokemon around you. Think about which team you’ll want to join and which Pokemon you’ll be fighting against. In the world of Pokemon Go, rare and powerful Pokemon are far and few between, so you can’t anticipate other players to use conventional types, like fire or water. The better players, however, will have well-rounded teams at their disposal. If you plan on going after Flareon, for example, you might want to pick up Squirtle in the beginning, or a Charmander if you plan on gunning for Vaporeon. Using Pokemon that compliment one another allow for better strategies during battles. Thinking about these types of tactics early on will give you better chances when you set off to tackle your first gym.
Once you pick your starter, take a walk around your neighborhood. Get a feel for the local Pokestops and gyms. Take note of what teams are in control and what types of Pokemon they’re using. While gym control does change often, you can expect a high-level trainer to rule for quite some time. Knowing your enemy will give you better insight into which Pokemon you should be hunting. Does a Flareon-using Valor member rule the gym around the corner? Head for water and catch some water-type Pokemon.

Different “biomes” cause different types of Pokemon appear more. Similarly, weather can cause Pokemon who may not typically appear in an area start and turn up. If you’re hunting bug- or grass-type Pokemon, like Beedrill or Bulbasaur, you’ll want to head to your nearby park or woods. If you picked Charmander and really want a Squirtle for your team, head to the beach or lake to enter a water biome. Just like the handheld games, your surroundings will dictate which Pokemon you can find.
As you play more and more, you’ll notice Pokestops, leveling up and performing other actions reward items. These items will help you maximize your play time and optimize your team. Eggs will hatch into Pokemon depending on how far they require you to walk, different types of Pokeballs will allow you to hunt more powerful creatures, and Razz berries will keep Pokemon from running away and make them easier to catch. Knowing which item to use at a particular moment is what separates amateurs from masters. Stay aware of what you have in your backpack and decide when and where to use your items.

Razz berries are a particular item that will become essential to hunting tougher Pokemon as you level up. Additionally, it’ll ensure your favorite Pokemon is easier to catch. Throughout your travels, you’ll accumulate a stockpile of Razz berries, so don’t be afraid to use them liberally. Saving them for high CP or rare Pokemon is a good strategy, but don’t shy away from securing a catch if you really like the Pokemon’s type or if they just so happen to be your all-time favorite.
Finally, become familiar with all of the game’s tools. There’s nothing worse than learning about an item or mechanic that would’ve helped with a catch after the fact. We get in-depth with some of the game’s more mysterious mechanics below, so study them and get to know them inside and out. The next time there’s a stampede to catch a rare Pokemon, be the first one to catch it, and don’t be left out of the fun.
Now that you’ve got the basics, check out our tips, tricks, and secrets below and become the very best, like no one ever was.

Guarantee 1000+ CP

For Pokemon that can evolve, their starting CP will dictate whether or not their final evolution will hit the coveted 1000+ mark. While each Pokemon grow at different rates, you can use PoGoToolKit to estimate their final CP.
